The Totam

Slideluck Potshow is a non-profit organization formed around two great ideas: food and art. Last night in New York City’s spacious Canoe Studios in Chelsea, SLPS put on its thirteenth NYC show. The event started, as the name would suggest, with a potluck dinner. The Totam never expected to discover San Francisco-based jeweler Alix Blüh’s workshop and gallery, Modern Relics, tucked away on a sleepy residential street in the heart of the Richmond district, but after spending a recent afternoon hearing the stories behind her wares, we’re delighted that the secret is out. Twenty years later, we are struck by the similarities between those student demonstrations in Beijing and the now week long demonstration in Iran. Both show us a people who are yelling for their voices to be heard and their needs for more freedom to be met. Both show us a government that is terrified of the slightest change in status quo for fear of losing its last shred of legitimacy.
