* Style Bloggers Apologize for Being So Awkward in Person
Posted on February 18th, 2009 by Joyce Tota. Filed under Blogs, Fashion Week, Spotted.

The lovely Garance, Susie, and Camille
Our favorite bloggers have left their desks and are all over New York Fashion Week. We spotted Susie Bubble at Tom Scott and Camille of Childhood Flames at the Matthew Ames show. Also out on the town is Paris-based Garance Doré who has been busy snapping lush pics of New York’s stylish set. Following up with their coverage, we have noticed a common theme of said bloggers writing about being greeted by amorous fans and humility ensues. Ms. Bubble comments, “YAY! I have readers in New York! I apologise for sounding so flustered and awkward when people come up to me. I’m a hardcore geek who can’t communicate with real human beings.” Likewise, Camille writes, “Apologies for being terribly awkward in person but I definitely appreciate you guys reading the blog and it’s so fantastic to meet some of my readers! You are all so lovely!”
This sort of bashfulness from the girls who regularly post images of themselves in amazing, sharp outfits for the world to see. Such a conundrum! While blogging is a very personal art form, actually getting out from behind the computer and realizing there are legions of people who actually read and follow every word and image is quite another thing. Maybe best said by Ms. Doré, “I turn around and someone jumps on me asking me if I am Garance Doré, and I assure you, it’s a little weird..”
* The Short List: The Economy, Again.
Posted on February 3rd, 2009 by Joyce Tota. Filed under American Fashion, Blogs, Design, Fashion.
- Style.com’s response to the current economic forecast? Depression Chic, the trend report which is referencing not the current recession, but the one from the 1930s. “Designers worked both sides of the crash of 1929, turning out glittery flapper frocks and faded sack dresses in equal measure.” Look for pieces that could have crawled out of the Dust Bowl (rusty plaids and floppy hats are a must) and Prohibition-ready flapper dresses.
- Domino magazine, the turn-to home style guide that inspired so many has announced its farewell, folding due to lack of advertisers. While it may not have been the Flair magazine of our time, it certainly had a similar stylish take on décor, entertaining, and travel that will be sadly missed.
- The best thing about being in a recession is having blogs which tell us to shop at Target and to find pieces at places like Forever21 and Express that resemble designer clothes, for a fraction of the price! We need blogs to inspire us, not point us in directions that aren’t going to fully feed our fashion needs. The blog Recessionista does a fine job of covering these topics and sometimes even mentions some great online sales. However, we do get the feeling that if Target had not invented its highly blogged about Go Collection, the Recessionista wouldn’t have much to report.
- Possibly not as a direct result of the economy, Jason Wu’s Fall fur line with Sara Furs has been put on hold to concentrate on his ready-to-wear line. The humane society rejoices.
* The Bowie Ball Drops this Saturday
Posted on December 4th, 2008 by Aileen Tat. Filed under Blogs, Fashion.
This year’s Bowie Ball comes hot on the heels of enthusiastic fans packing the sold-out theater at the Museum of Modern Art this past Monday, to watch a selection of Bowie videos curated and introduced by Thurston Moore. (Rob Sheffield at Blender.com posted a very apt description of the evening, along with six of the videos screened.)
Here’s another one I really enjoyed that night, for the Sottsass/Memphis-like set and for Bowie hamming it up in a pink shirtdress, strangers kissing him in the street:
“I am a DJ, I am what I play, I’m a believer, believe in me…”
Bowie Ball will feature DJs, performers and a fashion show, and is headlined by some infamous NYC clubland personalities paying homage to a variety of Bowie’s inventive and creative endeavors, including Motherfucker’s Michael T, Zandra Rhodes, Keanan Duffty, Lady Starlight, and Richie Rich.
And if you haven’t had your fill of the Chameleon of Pop by the time this weekend’s over, you’ll be glad to know that MoMA will be rescreening the Bowie videos December 19th.

* Fifi Lapin: One Stylish Lagomorph
Posted on November 25th, 2008 by Joyce Tota. Filed under Blogs, Fashion.

Fifi Lapin’s credo is “What should I wear today?”, a common question asked by many, however Fifi is not a girl, but rather an illustrated rabbit who wears designer clothes (Chanel and Luella are favorites) on her namesake blog. Fifi is a shopaholic Miffy, a girl rabbit who can have it all, because with delicate swipes of the artistic hand, she is wearing the latest runway creation with her signature deadpan look, ears alert and feet always slightly pigeon-toed. Creating envy by tailoring the latest looks to her straight and narrow frame, Ms. Lapin dispenses a froth of fashion advice with each new outfit while hopping to the next soiree. One stylish lagomorph indeed.
